Bilingual Language Specialist
Starting at $21.80 per hour
Job Objective:

Work closely with the classroom teacher/s to assist students for whom English is a second or other language (now referred to as English Learners, or ELs) in understanding - generally via bi/multilingual translating or interpreting skills - content assigned or delivered in core classes (English, math, science, and/or social studies.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must have professional or native-level fluency in Kinyarwanda.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S.
  • Must pass Federal and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation background check in accordance with Ohio Administrative Code Section 3301-83-06.
  • High School diploma.
  • Preference given to candidates with an associate's degree of college-level coursework or several years of professional experience in a field related to a core academic content area (English, math, science, and social studies).
  • Ability and willingness to work with students for whom English is a second or other language (English Learners).
  • Personal and/or professional knowledge of local immigrant communities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, and present information to students in a variety of formats.
  • Demonstrated willingness and patience in working with students of varied abilities.
  • Ability to operate a computer and utilize applicable software.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with others.
  • Experience working in an urban school district or working with urban education.
  • Ability and willingness to utilize technology in the enhancement of student learning.
  • Effective time management skills.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions of the Position:
  • Work with small groups of students in both their native language and English to fully understand and process content and work from their subject-area classes.
  • Help with orienting newly-arrived English Learner students and families to the school environment and community.
  • Regularly assist the school/s and English Learner department with outreach and parent-school communication efforts in English as well as the students' home or native languages.
  • Utilize language and cross-cultural skills to assist with classroom behavior management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task.
  • Assist the school/s and English Learners department with other duties as assigned.
