Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:

The primary purpose of the Certified Tumor Registry Abstractor, under the direction of the Tumor Registry Manager, is to conduct cancer data collection and completion of cancer registry abstracts for reportable cases in compliance with relevant Commission on Cancer (CoC) and Texas Cancer Registry (TCR) guidelines for submission to the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) and Texas Department of Health / Texas Cancer Registry.

Assists in setting priorities, deadlines and schedules in accordance with overall Cancer Registry Program goals; assists with quality assurance activities and assists with maintenance of Commission on Cancer (CoC) and National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) accreditations.

POSITION EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate / GED certificate or equivalent preferred
  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) required
  • HIM Associates degree preferred
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification preferred
  • Computer skills required with strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite; Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Good written and verbal communication skills required
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Strong attention to detail

JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

  • 2 years of Cancer Registry experience preferred
  • 1-2 years of medical records experience in release of information or auditing is preferred
  • Knowledge and experience of cancer registry software is required, experience with CRStar is preferred
  • Knowledge of CoC Standards is required, additional knowledge of NAPBC Standards is preferred
  • Knowledge of pertinent cancer staging systems (AJCC, SEER, etc.) is required
  • Knowledge in ICD-O (International Classification for Diseases - Oncology) is required
  • Knowledge in medical terminology is required
  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State and local regulations concerning medical records (HIPAA, HI-TECH, etc.)

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Abstract and code information from patient medical records using established classification systems
  • Responsible for interactive quality review of abstracted data
  • Assign and enter information into coded form
  • Abstract data adhering to institutional guidelines which is used internally and to maintain compliance with state reporting and accreditation requirements
  • Assists with Preparation and presentation of Cancer Registry Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) activities to include but not limited to the following Commission on Cancer Quality Programs:
  • Cancer Program Practice Profile Reports (CP3R)
  • Cancer Quality Improvement Program (CQIP)
  • Rapid Quality Reporting System (RQRS)
  • Assists with Compilation of abstracts for Annual Physician Review of Registry Data (PRRD)
  • Assists with preparation of data for NCDB submission
  • Assists with oversight of department
  • Assists with training and mentoring of staff
  • Participate on special projects
  • Attends webinars as assigned
  • Additional tasks as needed
