CAMPBELL COUNTY SCHOOLS
DEAF/HARD OF HEARING SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER
General Definition of Work:
Facilitates communication between hearing and deaf or hard of hearing students in classrooms and meetings using American Sign Language or other manual sign system; serves as a liaison between deaf or hard of hearing students, hearing students and instructors; and performs related work as required.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:

The interpreter works cooperatively with the special education department, students and a variety of direct service providers and consultants including: parents, classroom teachers; teachers of children with hearing impairments, or severe disabilities; speech therapists; occupational and physical therapists; orientation and mobility instructors; and other professionals as well as paraprofessionals.
Provides sign-language interpreter services.
Interprets lectures, discussions, announcements, conversations, meetings, events, and other spoken word situations using American Sign Language or other manual sign system appropriate for the language and the cultural background of deaf or hard of hearing students and staff.
Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite.
Uses interpersonal skills and makes sound judgments to decide how duties and responsibilities are completed between coworkers, the supervisory chain, faculty, staff, students, and customers.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Interpreter's specific duties will be individualized according to the needs of the child, the student's IEP, and the profile of the current educational placement. Has the primary responsibility to provide direct support to deaf or hard of hearing students during all or part of a school day as part of an educational team, and as indicated in the student's IEP; participates in and follows the student's IEP and the modifications and instructional techniques recommended by related service staff; become proficient in students' individual communication methods and strategies; creates instructional materials as needed; accompanies and supports the student during community-based instruction; maintains communication between home and school.
Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience:
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
American Sign Language (ASL) certification, through State Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) or National Registry Interpreter for the Deaf (RID).
