BURTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT
INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE I

JOB SUMMARY

Instructional Aide I will, under supervision of the site administrator(s) and direction of a Certificated employee, perform a variety of necessary duties of a responsible nature to assist in the planning and implementation of an effective learning program for children.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
District policies and procedures as they apply; Operation of a variety of office machines used in a modern office environment; Basic record-keeping techniques; Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; Oral and written communication skills; Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; Child growth and development principles; Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws.

Ability to:
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, staff and the public (including members of ethnic communities)
Make simple arithmetic calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) rapidly and accurately.
Perform routine clerical duties such as filing, duplication, keyboarding, and maintaining records.
Monitor, observe and report student behavior according to approved policies and procedures.
Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.
Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Compile, maintain, and submit accurate and complete records and reports.
Operate instructional and office equipment following proper instruction.
Assist a Certificated employee with assigned instructional activities.
Verify accuracy and completeness of documents and process data.
Learn procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties.
Understand and follow both oral and written directions.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Speak and understand Spanish (desirable).
Meet schedules and deadlines.
Plan and organize work.
Print and write legibly.
Work confidentially.

Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to: possession of Associate of Arts degree and/or sixty (60) completed semester units of college/university coursework required; one (1) year of experience in working with children/youth in an organized setting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION

1. Perform a wide variety of specialized and responsible work independently; Interpret and apply rules and regulations as appropriate; Follow district and school guidelines to protect student health, safety and well being.

2. Tutor individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher; Assist the teacher with individual learning activities whenever requested; Assist students in drill, practice, and study concepts as a follow-up to the presentation of instructional concepts by the teacher.

3. Implement lessons and lesson plans initiated by the teacher; Implement instructional strategies which have been developed by the teacher; Review and reinforce learning activities initiated by the teacher to assist students to master academic concepts and skills;

4. Under teacher direction, assess student needs and progress; Administer and score a variety of tests according to established guidelines.

5. Implement student behavioral policies as directed by Certificated staff; Monitor and report behavior of students according to approved procedures; Understand effective methods to deal with verbal outbursts and other forms of resisting authority; Correct student behavior as instructed by Certificated staff; Enforce school and class rules.

6. Assist in the preparation and duplication of learning materials; Collect, assemble and file instructional materials; Perform routine clerical duties and record-keeping such as attendance reports, completing forms, correcting student work, etc.; Operate audio-visual equipment; set up work areas and prepare bulletin boards and displays; Assist in setting up, monitoring and cleaning up of program facilities.

7. Oversee student activities in the classroom, playground and other school areas; Accompany students to the bus.

8. May assist students, Certificated staff, and/or parents with communication problems resulting from limited knowledge of English.

9. Participate in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned; Assist volunteers with activities as assigned.

10. Function as a role model, assisting students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and general guidance.

11. Incorporated within one or more of the previously mentioned essential functions of this job description are the following essential physical requirements.

4 Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.

Requirements / Qualifications

Associate of Arts Degree and/or forty-eight (48) completed semester units of college/university coursework. Instructional Aide assessment test certificates from TCOE also accepted.
