Job Description
Essential Job Functions: Provides immunization services and ACIP-recommended vaccines to children, adolescents and adults to maximize vaccine coverage levels in accordance with the DSHS Immunization Contractors Guide for Local Health Departments. Assists with ensuring that all ACIP-recommended vaccines are routinely available to patients who want them. Recommends the simultaneous administration of all needed vaccines for the patient. Follows only medically supportable contraindications to vaccination. Verbally educates patients and parents/guardians about the benefits and risks of vaccination, and distributes DSHS educational materials as applicable as part of this conversation. Discusses, and schedules the next immunization visit at each client encounter. Explains the benefits of a "medical home" and assists the parent/guardian in obtaining or identifying the child's medical home. Uses a Reminder/Recall system (manual, TWICES, ImmTrac, or other system). Follows "standing orders" for vaccination. Adheres to employee immunization policy according to CDC recommendations. Promotes and assesses immunization compliance. Meets and monitors the established goals and objectives of the department's immunization program. Participates in the Division's Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement activities. Other Job Functions: Performs related duties as assigned. Must comply with department's employee immunization policy. Regular hours 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday, occasional overtime and weekends as required. This position is considered essential personnel, and may be required to stay during an emergency or return early depending on the emergency. Knowledge: Practical working knowledge of basic nursing procedures and techniques and basic clerical and computer procedures. Skills/Abilities: Ability to write, speak, and read English and Spanish. Ability to apply the nursing process; ability to work with the public and other employees; ability to exercise judgment and initiative; ability to use syringes, needles; ability to investigate and gather information; ability to hear, to communicate orally and in writing. Physical Requirements: Constantly sees and hears; frequently drives, sits, stands, stoops, twists body, walks and writes by hand, lifts objects weighing up to 25lbs. Education/Experience: Graduation from accredited school of vocational nursing plus two (2) years experience in nursing with a license to practice vocational nursing in Texas. Experience in a public health practice and experience in vaccine administration. Other: Must be able to speak, read and write in Spanish. Must have current license to practice vocational nursing in Texas. Must possess a valid Class C Driver's License with a good driving record. Other state valid Driver's License equivalent to Texas Class C with a good driving record will be considered. Texas state law requires within 30 days of residency; must possess a valid Texas driver's license.
