Summary

The Health Department is seeking a full-time Support Staff III for the Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC). This grant-funded position is responsible for providing entry-level clerical and interpreting duties at WIC clinic sites throughout Chester County. The ability to communicate and work with a wide variety of culturally diverse participants with limited supervision is required. Bilingual (English and Spanish) required. Ability to obtain and maintain confidential information is crucial. Reliable vehicle and valid driver's license required. This position requires criminal background and child abuse clearances.

Essential Duties

  • At clinics, distribute and explain use of vouchers to existing and new participants and obtain participants' signature. Refer any complaints concerning WIC stores to the Retail Store Coordinator.
  • Refer clients to various services according to their needs.
  • Provide basic nutritional education to WIC participants.
  • Determine eligibility of WIC applicants by calculating income and household size, and by verifying identification, residency and medical assistance, food stamps, etc.
  • Perform Hemocue blood testing of WIC participants.
  • Measure height and weight of WIC participants.
  • Fax warehouse information for formula that is unavailable at WIC-approved stores. Send signed vouchers to the warehouse within established deadlines.
  • Prepare materials for satellite clinics.
  • Make reminder telephone calls to WIC participants. Follow-up on all "no-show" participants with telephone calls and reminder postcards.
  • Prepare reports (e.g., daily clinic activity profile, AS400 query reports, etc.).
  • Translate for nutritionists and other Health Department staff.
  • Translate written materials for Hispanic clients.
  • Provide farmers market program services (checks, education).
  • Collect immunization information for every child and refer to physician or well baby clinic if shots are needed.
  • Participate in WIC outreach activities.
  • Learn the state WIC computer system, including all data entry requirements (i.e., addresses, phone numbers, income, immunization information, Farmers Market vouchers, etc.), scheduling of appointments, education documentation and printing/voiding of checks, as well as updating WIC information.
  • Assist low-literacy participants by completing various required forms.
  • Contact doctors' offices for updated information.
  • Breastfeeding training a plus.
  • Knowledge of PrintShop a plus.
  • A valid driver's license and the use of a personal vehicle are required for this position.
  • Must complete training and maintain proficiency in bloodwork testing.
  • Will be required to deal with an extensive amount of paperwork.
  • Perform other duties, tasks and special projects, as required.

Qualifications/Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Qualifications / Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Any combination of equivalent experience and training.
  • Six months to one year of general office experience (typing, clerical, filing, copying, etc.).
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and handle confidential matters.
  • Basic spelling, grammar and math skills.
  • General computer knowledge.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interface with all levels of county management.
  • Basic typing / word processing skills (minimum of 40 wpm).
  • Ability to use office machines (fax, copier, calculator, etc.).

  • One to two years of general office experience and skills.
