Job Description
Emergent Bilingual (English Language Learner) Paraprofessional
Tier I Paraprofessional
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
Complete Para Pro or Workkeys Assessment or complete 48 hours of college
Bilingual Preferred
Training or Experience Required:
Previous work or volunteer experience with children, teenagers and or clerical experience preferred.
Reports to:
All paraprofessional duties are performed under the supervision of the EB teacher and principal at the school/location assigned.
Essential Job Functions/Performance Responsibilities:
Parent Contact
Call parents of EB students and arrange parent teacher conferences. Assist EB teacher in gathering grades, test scores, attendance and behavior reports, and any other material that may be pertinent to the parent and present the information during conferences.
Contact parents in the event of emergency situations, behavior issues, attendance issues, positive reinforcement, and special events as needed. Work with principals, counselors and teachers to assure parents are getting and understanding necessary information.
In the regular education classroom
Assist the classroom teachers with daily lessons including but not limited to: translating documents, lesson planning for EB students, accommodating daily work and tests for EB students, anticipating possible problems for EB students in lesson planning with teachers.
Assist classroom teacher with testing including circulating the classroom during testing or pull out/small groups during testing. Assist in getting tests from and back to the teachers during pull out/small group testing.
State Testing
Monitor for state testing under the supervision and guidance of the school counselor.
EB Classroom
Assist the EB teacher in the classroom and in pullout settings with daily lesson planning, teaching lessons, translating material, assisting in daily lessons assigned by classroom teachers, assisting with behavior an attendance issues, parent contact, and positive reinforcement.
Assist the EB teacher in the inclusion setting by entering classrooms under the supervision of classroom teachers.
Assist the EB teacher in scheduling and testing students with the WAPT and the ACCESS for ELL's as needed.
Assist the EB teacher in collecting Home Language Surveys and reviewing for accuracy. Parent contact may be necessary.
Professional Development
Assist the EB teacher in maintaining a positive cultural learning environment for teachers, counselors, support staff and principals. Encourage cultural questions and provide information as available to inform and educate staff on issues including but not limited to language, diversity, and culture.
Other Performance Measures:
Successful performance of the job requires some customer service/people skills to resolve problems and provide information as requested. It requires following safety guidelines and policies to reduce accident or injury to self or to students. It requires following school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habits concerns. Creativity, initiative and effective problem solving are important to the success of the position. In addition, must maintain a positive attitude and be cooperative toward other staff members, the public, and students within the educational system.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions:
This job requires frequent bending/stooping and occasional to frequent squatting/crouching, reaching above the shoulder, and pushing and pulling. There is occasional lifting up to 45 pounds to assist the lifting of chairs, classroom equipment and supplies. The incumbent must have the dexterity to operate keyboards, computers, copy machines, and other office/instructional machines. Must be able to supervise students in the classroom and outside. Must be able to communicate with students and parents. Must be able to get around the classroom, media center, cafeteria, campus, etc. Must be able to assist students with normal activities.
